Waiting in the Green Room

Monday, January 28, 2008

So, got whooped on Sunday making an attempt on The Green Room at Frankenstein in NH. The climb is a wide corner crack that chokes with ice for about the first third of the route, and then opens up to hateful stein-pulls and no feet. To the best of my knowledge, Doug Madera was the first to send this beast in the winter about two years ago with Bayard Russell. Doug called it M8, but he is also a notorious sandbagger (some part of me appreciates that, just not the part that got spanked by his "M8"). The Green Room goes at 5.11+ in warmer weather with rock shoes, but is significantly harder sporting crampons. The coup de grace is the roof 2/3 of the way up that bears access to a more reasonable corner. Wow! Looking forward to going back soon.
