Jennifer & Scott: A Squam Lake Wedding

Thursday, December 3, 2009

On a gorgeous Fall day I had the great pleasure of photographing Jennifer and Scott's wedding. Their service and reception took place on a family friend's property on Squam Lake in New Hampshire. Jennifer and Scott are very much outdoors, and especially water, people, and their wedding day reflected that. From the complimentary canoeing maps to Jenny's custom made Chaco sandals, they and their guests (many of whom stayed with them on the property) were wrapped in the great outdoors, nestled in the foothills of the White Mountains. It was an honor to be a part of their wedding, and here are some of the images from the day.

This is the wonderful lake side home, fully decked out in solar panels, canoes and kayaks.

Jennifer and Scott put together these Squam Lake maps for their guests, along with safety whistles in case they were lost, I suppose. The maps were a fun detail, and many of the guests enjoyed some canoeing and kayaking prior to the wedding...

In this next image, I love the contrast of the bright, soft flowers versus the hard, gray granite...

Many of Jennifer and Scott's guests stayed with them at the house. I found this cute note in the home's guest registry book...

I mentioned earlier the custom Chaco sandals that Jenny had made. These were great, and are hands down the most unique pair of shoes I saw all year...

Jenny and Scott were both getting ready in the house, except in separate wings. It was fun watching messages get couriered back and forth by their friends and family since wanted to be sure not to see each other before the ceremony. Here is Jennifer applying the finishing touches...

And here she is after slipping into her gown. A screen was in place to ensure no sneak peeks, and it helped to frame this shot beautifully...

Scott was enjoying himself also while getting ready...

The intimate ceremony took place right behind the house. The guests were cozily seated in a semi-circle in the shade of the house, while the Jenny and Scott were blasted by the lowering sun...

From a photographic perspective, the sun was harsh and created significant contrast. Less than ideal, but you can't easily ask everyone to please move 15 steps to the right, I suppose. That is part of the challenge of wedding photography, dealing with the conditions and light as you find them.

It was a very touching, and humorous service performed by none other than Scott's father. I love this photograph of father and son during the cermony...

And one more from the ceremony, this time with Jen's sister Karin fighting the sun...

After the ceremony, and just prior to sneaking away for a few minutes, the newlyweds sat for a breather and a laugh. Naturally, Scott kicked back in his own Black Chacos!

And here are a few of the portraits captured...

Jennifer looking stunning...

And Scott looking on, always with a grin...

Followed by a romantic interlude on the balcony...

After the mandatory family portraits, it was down the hill to the reception. Scott's brother Brian entertained us all with a funny and heartfelt toast to his brother and new sister-in-law...

Then it was time for their first dance...

And cake...

And then more dancing. I love this shot of Jenny and Karin...

And a final shot of the happy couple...

Jennifer and Scott — Thank you so much for allowing me to share and capture your day!
